Financial Controller (Clear Route to Finance Director) | Sheffield | £60,000 – £75,000 base salary depending on experience (+ suite of benefits)

The Opportunity

There is so much to like about this opportunity. It’s a role for someone that wants to progress to FD level within a profitable and stable SME in the next 3 – 4 years.

You’ll join as Financial Controller, working for an FD looking to execute a phased retirement plan. So, there is genuine and clear appetite to take you on the journey to ‘number 1 in finance’.

It’s a thriving SME, circa £10m turnover. A well-managed and well-respected business with an excellent reputation in their niche specialist market. Your role will encompass the full gambit of financial reporting and control for the organization – initially supporting the FD with all aspects of monthly reporting, financial management, management accounting, budgeting, forecasting and year end requirements.

As with any SME you’ll also enjoy trying on hats that aren’t necessarily out and out accounting shaped – supporting with HR requirement, legals, property purchase, insurances, etc. A chance to add more valuable strings to your bow and more variety to your working week.

There is also a stream of chunky and extremely varied ad hoc projects that will land on your desk & you’ll be given autonomy to make a proactive difference.

You will be able to take advantage of the mentoring and guidance before hopefully taking the reins in the next 2 – 3 years or so. You’ll be a financial sounding board to operational and commercial areas of the group and input into key decision-making.

As with any SME of this size the finance role is varied, busy and challenging and you’ll have chance to use your intellect and experience to proactively make a difference. But you’ll also enjoy a really sensible work life balance; 35 hour week (lunchtime finish every Friday!!), element of hybrid working, sensible deadlines and manageable demands).

It’s a lean finance team (you will manage an Assistant Accountant who looks after AP / AR / core transactions) so you need to be absolutely comfortable getting into the nitty gritty and understanding the numbers (and drivers of the business) from ‘bottom-up’.

You also need to be someone who is comfortable getting out into the belly of the business (manufacturing and assembly teams, R&D, warehouse, sales etc). It’s a circa 50-employee business and you need to be someone who can build excellent working relationships at every level and in every area.

Required:

• A professional qualification ACCA, ACA or CIMA and a track record of success at Finance Manager / Financial Controller level.
• A sound awareness of the requirements of an SME in the £10m – £20m turnover bracket.
• A hands-on and proactive approach to understanding the numbers and getting under the skin of the levers of success across the business.
• Excellent analytical skills and a real eye for detail, anomalies and trends.
• Appetite to progress to number 1 in finance.
• A measured and calm approach to problem solving and a good degree of common sense!
