The Opportunity

Well established, owner led SME (circa £5m turnover) based in Chesterfield have a requirement for an ambitious, confident and hands on Financial Controller to join their team on a permanent basis.

You will join at an exciting juncture, with growth and expansion planned both in the UK and overseas, and you will play a pivotal role in building and shaping the finance function whilst providing a strategic financial sounding board to the owners across all aspects of the group.

You will be a key decision maker within the business from day 1 – driving cost saving initiatives and maximising profit by getting out into the business and getting under the skin of the numbers.

Reporting directly to the MD, you will develop insightful management information, KPI and commercial reporting, including project costing (margin analysis, labour costs, product performance, client spend etc). You will present vital financial information and help non-finance to understand the commercial impact of the numbers, and drive change and efficiencies from an operational and sales perspective.

The successful candidate will be hands on, with full responsibility of the day-to-day financial control of the business – with the ability to identify and implement effective processes and controls, taking responsibility for balance sheet integrity, tax obligations and statutory reporting.

You’ll hold the full train set and be responsible for a broad and hands on remit in a business that is in great shape and has growth plans – there is potential for equity at director level downstream for the right candidate.

The Business requires

As Financial Controller you will need:

  • A proven track record as financial controller / company accountant / finance manager within a diverse SME.
  • A proactive approach to driving change and continuous improvement
  • Knowledge of the drivers of success and challenges faced within a growing SME
  • Ability to produce detailed and credible management accounts and experience of all aspects of month end.
  • The ability to implement robust financial processes and controls
  • Leadership skills with the ability to lead and motivate a team
  • Excellent IT skills including knowledge of Excel and Sage ideally.
  • Great interpersonal skills.
  • A hands-on, sleeves rolled up approach (this is not an ivory tower role!)
  • An ability to provide strong financial information for a non-finance audience and present to board level.
  • Confidence and positivity when approaching new challenges.
